City Dance was founded in 2003 and we shared an 11,000 square foot space with City Ballet School in the performing arts district of San Francisco (until July 31, 2018). This beautiful building had soaring ceilings, great natural light and parking! We met so many incredible people and shared the richest life experiences within those walls. Thousands of people danced in our studios over the years and it was a thriving, diverse community.
Unfortunately, we were not immune to gentrification, and eventually a developer purchased the building, tore it down and they have started to build luxury condos on the site.
After looking for several years we have just signed a lease on 1144 Howard Street, an inspiring two story, 8,000 square foot building and our architects have just finished an elegant layout for the space. We plan to break ground on the renovations as soon as possible.
We decided to start City Dance Gives, a non-profit arm of City Dance, to raise funds for the build-outs that will be required. Expected costs include sprinklers, an elevator, new windows, sprung dance floors, mirrors, walls, architects, engineers and contractors. With soaring rents in San Francisco, our rent will be 4 times what it was in our old building. We are making plans that include increasing our class offerings, producing more in-studio performances, selling merchandise and boosting our online classes so that we can comfortably afford our new rent.
The expected urgency for funding is from now until the construction is finished. We have borrowed some of the necessary funds but we are in need of an additional 300,000 dollars to complete the work. All donations to City Dance Gives are tax deductible. Please consider making a donation today. We are looking forward to having a new home for our community and to increasing our programs!
